
The winemakers

For about fifteen years, I have only been drinking what are called “natural” wines — in other words, wines made from grapes that are at least organically grown and vinified naturally, without any chemical additives or added sulfites. I have noticed that these wines, made with care, are often more flavorful, frequently more festive, and generally less likely to cause a hangover. These winemakers are “natural,” and they craft their wines with the same feeling as the music that unites them on pruning or harvest nights. I painted them on the fly, with bold, spontaneous strokes, without calculation or regret — so, instinctively but skillfully, just like how they make their wines. Here, all the joy of painting lies in the gesture. You have to look closely to follow it…
